Forty Compositions with Four Colors (8), 2020

Pencil on paper

10.5 x 14.8 cm

Forty Compositions with Four Colors is an exercise, a series on finding balance by placing shapes within shapes, by merging, touching, and overlapping figures. Blue. Green. Red. Yellow. Blue squares, green semicircles, red and yellow lines, blue circles, green and red lozenges, yellow stripes, blue triangles... always touching with one another, never isolated. Some compositions might find comfort in the center of the page, while others find it towards the borders. The only rule in play is that any figure to be drawn—but the first one—had to respond to whatever was drawn before until that moment in which the composition reaches a kind of visual harmony and thus stability.
